Walking in the Tintagel Area

On this page we've collected a selection of different types of walks around Tintagel and the surrounding area in North Cornwall. They include coastal, woodland and moorland walks and generally include places of historical interest as well as great scenery, and some optional geocaching. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do.

Circular walks around the Tintagel area from Park Farm

Footpath to Backways Cove

We've compiled a set of circular walks starting from Park Farm ranging from 2.5 to 6.5 miles, each with a route map and directions. Some are pretty much on the flat and some have some steep climbs so we've also given them a strenuousness grade. We've also indicated where there are geocaches nearby in case you'd like to combine the walks with geocaching. See our Park Farm circular walks page for a list and a link to the page for each walk.

If you fancy something a bit shorter or easier, we've collected some of our favourite short walks of between 0.5 and 2 miles. These include iconic places such as Tintagel Castle but also some less well-known places where you're much more likely to see wildlife than tourists even in the busiest part of the Summer. For any geocachers fancying more of a "geo-stroll", we've annotated these with geocaches too.

Walking the coast path

The official website for the coast path is www.southwestcoastpath.com. They also produce some printed guides which cover sections of the coast. The relevant section for North Cornwall is "Minehead to Padstow". This is available from the Tintagel Visitor's Centre and at a discounted price from Amazon. Leaflets for walks along the coast path created by North Cornwall District Council are also available from the Visitors Centre in Tintagel or Boscastle.

There is also a book of Pub walks along the coast path available.

North Cornwall District Council (now Cornwall County Council) have produced some excellent walk leaflets which describe the local history and wildlife along the way. They cost between 50p and £1 and you can pick them up from the Visitor Centre in Tintagel or Boscastle. They range from leisurely "parish walks" of a couple of miles to some more heavyweight circular walks of 6-9 miles.

Some of those that you could feasibly attempt starting at Park Farm (which would add on a mile or two in most cases) or from the Tintagel visitor centre are:

or with a short drive to Boscastle:

Some longer stretches suitable for a longer hike or several walks include:

There is a bit more info on the Tintagel and Boscastle vistor centre's website.

North Cornwall District Council have also produced some village and town trail leaflets which take you on a tour around some of North Cornwall's historic ports and fishing villages. They cost around £1 and you also can pick them up from the Visitor Centre in Tintagel or Boscastle. They include:

The BBC website contains some nicely produced audio guides for walks:

They are currently in realmedia format, but the BBC are moving over to using MP3 for their audio so these might soon be available in a more convenient format to take with you. In the meantime you can use media-convert.com or a downloadable audio format converter to get them onto your mp3 player.

OS maps for North Cornwall

We recommend the OS Explorer (more detailed) maps over the Landranger maps as the Explorer maps show field boundaries, making it much easier to tell where you are. The iwalknorthcornwall website lists the relevant OS Explorer maps for walking in North Cornwall. If possible, please buy them from Amazon through iwalknorthcornwall, as that way you get them for best price going, and Amazon contribute a small amount to more North Cornwall walks being written. Note there are 2 versions available: the "Active" maps are heavy duty waterproof plastic.

Where you can buy walking gear nearby

Just on the left of the roundabout as you come into Tintagel is "Camping, Sport and Leisure" - an Aladin's Cave of outdoor stuff. If you know you're going to need something in advance, they can order things in even if they don't have them in stock. Their telephone number is 01840 770060.
